George Matteson: The Man and His Maps

October 1, 2025 @ 6:00 pm - 7:30 pm

George Matteson hailedfrom Scituate and spent his life surveying the backwoods, digging into local legends, and preserving our rich history. We treasure his wonderful maps, beautifully illustrated with local landmarks, history, and folklore. For 40 years, George Matteson worked as a forest ranger. He served as a search and rescue specialist, participating in more than
9,000 rescues of lost hunters and hikers, 100 plane crash rescue missions, andmyriad forest fire patrols. In collaboration with George Matteson’s grandson, Paul St. Amand, who has carefully preserved his grandfather’s maps and legacy, Steve and Linda Kornatz from The Scituate Preservation Society will present a program to reveal more about this incredible mapmaker whose maps of
Rhode Island towns hang in collections around the world. Several of Matteson’s maps of Scituate and nearby towns will be on display.
